HELPING OTHERS

On August 4, 2011 we held our first bee at Mission del Sol Church.  Their generosity has allowed us to use their space 11 times every year absolutely free, never asking for anything in return.  As a gesture of thanks we've tried doing something in the past to help them with their missions and last year we seemed to hit on a good way.  We participated in a hygiene drive they do twice a year, March and November, with the Kyrene Foundation.  Items are collected and distributed to qualifying underprivileged families in our community.  The items collected are packaged using a ziploc bag into kits with each kit containing all of the following items:
1. Shampoo
2. Conditioner
3. Toothbrushes
4. Toothpaste
5. Bar Soap
6. Deodorant

Participation in the drive is completely voluntary.  If you would like to participate in the drive we will be collecting the items listed above during our March and April bees.  You can bring the items already made into kits or kits will be made using your items.

SPECIAL VISITOR

Boy Scout Ryan presented us with a quilt during last months show n' tell.  Ryan was working on earning a badge and making a quilt for charity allowed him to earn the badge he was after.  His grandma, Barb W. a Peace by Piece volunteer, shared her quilt making know how with Ryan and together they got the job done.  Way to go Ryan!

RAFFLE WINNERS

Last month we pulled the winning tickets for two large raffle items.  Both items were on the raffle table for two months giving many volunteers a chance to purchase chances to be the lucky winner.

Linda C. was the lucky winner of the Generations Create a Bag.

It's an innovative rolling workstation which includes pockets to organize and store your supplies.  This is a rugged piece of rolling suitcase luggage.  There is a roomy interior cavity for projects or a small portable sewing machine with plenty of storage areas with zippered closures and a hidden telescoping handle.  Created for scrapbookers, great for quilters and crafters!

The second item was won by Diane W.

Does this picture make you think... Déjà vu?  That's because Diane won another large raffle item back in November.  Makes us wonder, just how many raffle tickets does she buy?

This time her win was a wonderful LARGE basket packed full of quilty items put together by AZB4K Board Member Letty Fowell.  Letty is a raffle basket making QUEEN!  Maybe Diane will bring her win to the bee so we can all see what was in that basket!

DUKE'S CORNER

Hi everyone, Duke here.

Mom's been busy making shelter beds and took a car load in January and February!  That's a lot of beds.  The gang and I sure enjoy helping her out whether it be sniffing the bags, sorting scraps or testing the beds.  Bella even made sure that every nook and cranny of the car was filled with beds.  Yes, mom will be accepting your scraps at the March bee.  Oh, she'll also have a bag of bags to repurpose for future scraps.

 QUOTES & TIDBITS

National Quilting Day is observed on March 19, 2016. It celebrates quilts and those who make them annually on the third Saturday in March. The National Quilting Association started National Quilting Day in 1991. Their members passed a resolution in Lincoln, Nebraska, on June 1991.

Today New York's St. Patrick's Day parade is the longest running civilian parade in the world. This year nearly three million spectators are expected to watch the spectacle and some 150,000 participants plan to march.

Dublin's St. Patrick's Day parade is little more than 75 years old. This year festival organizers will launch 15,000 pounds of fireworks to cap their celebration, which is expected to draw 400,000 spectators.

JUST FOR GRINS

12 Reasons Why I Buy Fabric

  1. It insulates the closet where it is kept.
  2. It helps keep the economy going. It is our patriotic duty to support cotton farmers, textile mills and fabric shops.
  3. It is less expensive and is more fun than psychiatric care.
  4. Because it is on sale.
  5. A sudden increase in the boll weevil population might wipe out the cotton crop for the next ten years.
  6. The one who dies with the most fabric wins.
  7. It keeps without refrigeration.
  8. You don’t have to cook it to enjoy it. You never have to feed it, change it, wipe it’s nose or walk it.
  9. Like dust, it’s good for protecting previously empty spaces in the house, like the ironing board, the laundry hamper, the dining room table…
  10. Stress from dealing with the Fabric Control Officers (my spouse/significant other) made me do it.
  11. It’s not immoral, illegal or fattening.
  12. It calms the nerves, gratifies the soul and makes me feel good.
